Picking the wrong one means spending money on something that doesn’t actually fix what’s bothering you about driving at night, on the trail, or around camp.

Rock Lights: Low-Mounted Accent and Utility Lighting
Rock lights are small, rugged LED pods mounted low on the vehicle — under the frame, in the wheel wells, or along the rocker panels — pointed down and out rather than forward. Despite the name, most owners aren’t using them to literally light up rocks on the trail; they’re used for ground-level visibility, engine bay work lighting, and increasingly, for color-changing accent lighting.
Best for: Night wheeling where you need to see wheel placement over obstacles, tire changes and roadside work in the dark, and vehicle owners who want a customized look with RGB or color-changing accent lighting.

Underglow & Visual Effects Lighting Legality in Nebraska
This is the question we field quite often, especially once customers start looking at RGB rock lights or dedicated underglow kits: is it actually legal to run colored lighting on a vehicle in Nebraska?
The short answer: Nebraska doesn’t have a law that names “underglow” specifically, but that doesn’t mean anything goes. Nebraska’s general vehicle lighting statutes still apply to underglow and accent lighting, and they set real limits:
- Intensity limits. Under Nebraska’s vehicle lighting statutes, any lighting device that puts out more than 25 candlepower has to be aimed so the beam doesn’t strike the road surface more than 50 feet from the vehicle. Underglow and rock lights aimed downward at the ground generally satisfy this by design, but it’s worth knowing the rule exists.
- Color restrictions. Red and blue are reserved for emergency vehicles in Nebraska, and using them on a civilian vehicle — underglow included — can draw the same scrutiny as improperly using emergency lighting. Green is similarly best avoided. The rear of any vehicle is restricted to red for taillights and stop lamps, and red, yellow, or amber for turn signals — no other colors are permitted to show from the rear.
- No flashing or rotating effects. Nebraska law prohibits rotating or flashing lights on non-emergency vehicles. Many RGB kits include flashing, strobing, or chase patterns as a feature — those modes are the most legally risky way to run the lights on a public road, regardless of color.
- Auxiliary lighting caps. Nebraska limits vehicles to no more than two auxiliary driving lights and one spotlight (outside of law enforcement, government, or public utility vehicles), which is more relevant to light bars and pods mounted up front than to underglow, but matters if you’re combining multiple lighting upgrades on one build.
Practically, here’s what that means for a Lincoln-area customer: white, amber, or similar “safe” colored underglow and rock lighting run in solid (non-flashing) mode is generally the lower-risk setup under Nebraska’s existing statutes. Red, blue, and flashing/chase modes are where you run into the same rules that govern emergency vehicle lighting — and that’s where a warning or citation is far more likely.
One more practical note: these rules apply to lighting used on public roads. Many RGB and show-lighting kits are genuinely intended for use at car shows, on private property, or with the vehicle parked — which sidesteps the on-road restrictions entirely. Nebraska takes the “general rules apply” approach, but not every state does. A handful of states have gone further and explicitly prohibit underglow and similar undercarriage lighting, regardless of color or how it’s used:
Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Washington are the states most consistently cited as banning underglow outright, either by naming it directly in their vehicle equipment statutes or by restricting vehicle lighting to a short list of approved colors and devices that simply doesn’t include aftermarket undercarriage lighting. In a couple of these states, the ban covers installation itself — meaning you can be cited even if the lights are never switched on while driving.
If you’re a customer relocating from one of these states, or you’re planning a build for someone who splits time between states, it’s worth checking the specific current statute rather than assuming Nebraska’s more permissive approach travels with you.
